In Loving Memory of Jonathan “Jon” Matthews

It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Jonathan “Jon” Matthews, 65, of Springfield, who peacefully left this world on December 12, 2024. Jon was born on August 15, 1959, to the late Samuel and Eleanor Matthews. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who touched the lives of everyone he met.

Jon spent his early years growing up in the small town of Brookfield before moving to Springfield in 1985. He was known for his boundless generosity, infectious sense of humor, and the unwavering support he offered to his family and friends.

Jon had a passion for gardening, woodworking, and volunteering at the local food bank. His work as an electrical engineer brought him satisfaction, but it was his role as a mentor and friend that left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know him.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia “Pat” Matthews, whom he married in 1982, his children, Emily (Derek) Hughes and Michael Matthews, and his cherished grandchildren, Noah and Ava Hughes. Jon also leaves behind his siblings, Claire (Henry) Dawson, and David Matthews, along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Jon’s family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the caregivers and medical staff who made his final days peaceful. A celebration of life will be held on December 18, 2024, at the Devonshire Funeral Home, where friends and family are invited to share memories and stories of Jon’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Springfield Food Bank in his memory. Jon’s legacy of kindness, humor, and love will forever be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace.
